DANBY VILLAGE HALL
Brief History

Exterior |
A public meeting attended by 112 residents was held at Danby School on 3 November 1955 to decide on a proposal to erect a village hall in Danby.
The proposal was accepted unanimously and the project to build Danby Village Hall began.
A site was chosen in the most central position in Danby End, the land being given and conveyed to the trustees by Viscount Downe. Planning for the hall, including fund raising, began in earnest. It is testimony to the original management committee and Viscount Downe with support by the local residents that the building of the hall was completed and opened on Easter Monday in April 1958 by Lady Downe (just over two years from the original meeting to completion).
The hall was built by Harland Bros of Glaisdale in natural stone, obtained locally in the area, and the foundation stones came from Danby Castle which was built more than 600 years ago.
Today
Almost 50 years on the hall has not changed a great deal. The building composes of a large main auditorium which can seat around 200 people and has a permanent stage which can be used for plays or for groups/bands to play music.
In addition there is a supper room and a small meeting room attached to a kitchen. The supper room was actually added in 1960.
At this moment in time the kitchen is currently being refurbished. The kitchen has a double oven gas cooker and the hall can therefore be used to cater comfortably for at least a hundred people.
There are ladies, gents and disabled toilets and a recently installed disabled access ramp. There are two store rooms for tables, chairs, cleaning equipment and gas meters (the hall is heated by gas heaters).
Outside there is a large gravel car park.
The hall is used by the local community for various activities such as badminton, short tennis and a keep fit club. A locally formed group known as Welcome In meet on a regular basis to play scrabble, cards and other games and generally socialise. This is popular with our more senior friends and has been going for over ten years.

Interior |
In addition craft and antique fairs are often held as well as local producer fairs. Dinners, dances and wedding receptions are not uncommon.
The hall has a Public Entertainment Licence which restricts the number of people allowed on the premises to 304. The opening hours for providing public entertainment are: Monday to Saturday 11-1am the following day; Sunday 10-10.30pm.
Annually the hall committee hold a Christmas luncheon for the over 60s of the village including Ainthorpe and surrounding Danby addresses.
The hall is currently run by an elected committee, all volunteers who give up their time to ensure the hall meets the community requirements. They meet on a quarterly basis. The hall is a registered charity.
The hall can be hired by anyone and charges are detailed further below.
