ENGLAND cricket legend and former captain Sir Ian Botham has given his backing to a promising 13-year-old from Lealholm.
Sir Ian – known as Beefy – was so impressed when he heard of Liam Featherstone's talents, he sent the youngster a signed copy of his book My Sporting Life.
Inside, he wrote a message wishing Liam all the best and saying good luck for the future.
Liam's aunty Barbara Pearson lives near Sir Ian and the hero batsman – famous for pulverising Australia in the Ashes in 1981 – asked for Liam's address so he could send him the book.
It is a great honour for Liam, who has impressed playing for Lealholm's adult side in the Eskdale League and Esk Valley Evening Leagues.
He won the club's player of the season award which was voted for by his colleagues, along with the best bowling average.
And if that was not enough, he was also chosen as the best under 17s player in the Eskdale League.
Liam has also made his mark in the Whitby and District Junior League, playing for Glaisdale as Lealholm don't have a junior side.
He won the league's best batting average with 38 along with a cup for the most catches and was runner-up with his bowling average, despite terrific figures of a wicket every six runs. He also won a singles knockout trophy.
Liam is now training in the nets with Whitby Cricket Club captain Paul Harrison and his brother Mark, along with Glaisdale's Darren Harland.
Liam's dad Pat said: "They are taking him to nets, nurturing him along and keeping an eye for his progress."
Botham holds a number of Test records as an all-rounder, including being the fastest to achieve the doubles of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets, 2,000 runs and 200 wickets, and 3,000 runs and 300 wickets.
During the 1981 Ashes, Botham set a record of six sixes in a single Ashes Test Match at Old Trafford.
