A FIRST class Lealholm postman has reached the finals of a national competition to find the nation's postie of the year.
Kind-hearted Barry Hutchinson of Wilks Farm has spent the past few years raising cash for charity including parachuting out of a plane, abseiling, trekking along the Great Wall of China and taking part in the Great North Run.

So far he has netted more than £8,000 for charity.

Barrie was announced as one of the regional winners in Royal Mail’s First Class People Awards for his dedicated efforts in helping others earlier in the year.

Barry won the regional round and was one of three winners put forward to represent Yorkshire, the North East and North Lincolnshire in the national final held in London recently.

And although he didn’t win, Barry was presented with a certificate and £500 money by TV presenter, Lorraine Kelly and Adam Crozier, chief executive of the Royal Mail and said it had been a wonderful experience and he was very proud.

“Lorraine Kelly was great,” said Barry. “She never shut up. She said well done. She was lovely.”

But Barry won’t have much time to put his feet up before his next fund-raising feats - he hopes to take part in a Sahara Trek for Scope in September and walk along the Inca trail in Peru later in the year for charity
