THE CENTENARY of Goathland Village Hall was marked recently by a celebration for villagers and an exhibition of its history.
Construction of the building, formerly the parish hall, began in April 1908 on land belonging to the Goathland Golf and Tennis Club, which they had bought for the site of a tennis court.

The vicar at that time was a Reverend Hare and the church bought the site of the hall in 1907 from the club for £172.6d which they raised by public subscription.

Recently, the parish hall like others throughout the country, had to become a registered charity so the name was changed to Goathland Village Hall.

At the centenary celebration a new name sign was unveiled by Coun Herbert Tindall. Children from Goathland village school – due to celebrate its 200th anniversary in July – entertained villagers with a medley of songs accompanied on drums they had made themselves and music was also provided by Bert Pearce and Mary Newton.

There was an exhibition about the hall’s history, researched by former chairman of the hall committee Ken Croft and the event proved popular with a large number of local residents who were served with refreshments including wine and coffee.
