LOCAL rally driver Ryan Champion is a late entrant for tomorrow's nail-biting North Humberside Forest Rally.
The Castleton driver (32) will compete in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution in the event which starts and ends in Whitby.
Hundreds of spectators are expected for the start of the race which sets off from the Captain Cook statue at 9am before heading off into the forests and back to Whitby at around 3.40pm.
The route contains six special stages on the North York Moors, totalling 43 miles.
Champion – winner of the 2005 Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge – is looking forward to racing again as a lack of sponsorship has limited the number of events he can compete in.
He led the main event to the forest stages last year and was on course for victory until coming a cropper in Cropton.
Last year's winner Steve Perez returns to the action tomorrow following a spell out of action caused by an accident on the East African Safari Rally in December.
Runners-up here last year, Will Nicholls and Nick Broom, journey up from the south coast to try to capitalise on the slender lead they have in the series at this early stage in their Subaru Impreza WRC.
Tomorrow's rally also marks the launch of the 2008 BTRDA Rally First Challenge.
This is an opportunity for existing crews who want competition at an affordable level and a lower-cost entry point to forest rallying for new competitors.
The challenge runs on the remaining seven rounds of the 2008 BTRDA Rally Series, with each competitor's best five scores to count towards their final tally.
Tomorrow's event was switched from Whitby to Hull last year to cut down on distance travelled to and from the race. Regulations are available from entries secretary Amanda Smith on (01947) 821862.
