UGTHORPE cricketers are fuming at a decision which they fear could jeopardise their chances of winning the Esk Valley Evening League.
Their opponents Castleton turned up to a recent Wednesday night clash but refused to play due to heavy rain which hit the area.
Ugthorpe insisted the wicket was safe to play on and recorded a home win on the result card. But a league meeting held fi
ve days later concluded the result should be a draw.
It means both sides are awarded one point – if the game had been played, the winners would have picked up three.
Speaking for Ugthorpe Cricket Club, Brian Summerson told the Whitby Gazette this week: "This sets a precedent for any team to choose whether or not they feel like playing games as there is an incentive not to play by gaining a draw, rather than risking defeat.
"Ugthorpe would have been more than happy to replay the game at a later date but the league meeting said this was not to happen.
"We would have appealed against the decision of the league but this is not allowed either.
"As we are top of the league at the moment, losing two points through no fault of our own seems to us to be very harsh."
Mr Summerson said a match only two miles away at Mulgrave was played to a result on the same night.
"As far as we're concerned, Castleton forfeited the match as at no point was the game called off," he added.
In response, Castleton's Graham Thompson said: "You don't play cricket in rain."
League chairman John Morgan said the situation had been reviewed by an independent panel and its decision was made fully in accordance with league rules – and the decision is final.
"The laws of cricket state that if the two captains can't agree on a situation of whether the pitch is fit to play on, whatever situation you are at remains," he said. "It was a difficult situation but the processes were followed through to the letter."
