Cup final weekend ends in double blow for Lealholm
LEALHOLM Football Club's weekend ended in disappointment when they lost both cup finals they were involved in.
Lealholm 1 Bull's Head 2
LEALHOLM began well in the Northern Echo Cup final at the Turnbull Ground on Friday night.
Within two minutes, they won a corner which Phil Brown collected, but his shot hit the bar.
Five minutes later Dave Welham took a free-kick which he directed into the box.
The ball hit Matt Hindmarsh and found its way into the net, much to the player's surprise.
Bull's Head came back into the match as Ben Crooks beat the offside trap and looked set to score but Lealholm keeper James Gibson made an excellent save, taking the ball at Crooks' feet.
The Bull's Head front line were very fast and Lealholm found it difficult to cope with the speed of attack.
Man of the match Crooks levelled after dribbling along the edge of the box to net a good individual goal.
Two minutes before half-time, Crooks again was involved when he ran down the right, played the ball back for his fellow striker to score.
Lealholm changed their formation for the second half and coped better with the attack but, despite some pressure, did not threaten the Bull's Head defence.
Lealholm 2 Ryedale Sports Club 5
LEALHOLM lost their second final in four days at the Turnbull Ground, when they lost 5-2 to Ryedale Sports Club in the final of the Scarborough and District Junior Cup on Monday.
The match was effectively lost in the first half, with Ryedale going 3-0 up within 30 minutes.
Marc Dobson opened the scoring after six minutes, heading in at close range from a corner.
Heath Brown increased the lead 10 minutes later after a good break and cross down the right wing.
Then Adam Hornby scored the third after outpacing the Lealholm defence.
In reply, Lealholm brought on Mike Thompson and shuffled their defence and were unlucky not to pull a goal back before half-time when Kev Brown saw his lob just go over the bar.
Lealholm came out more determined in the second half, but went a further goal behind when the ball bounced kindly for Harry Reed, who found himself unmarked in the box to finish well.
Only now did Lealholm really play and they controlled much of the rest of the game.
After half chances for Mike Thompson and Anthony Morgan had gone begging, Lealholm eventually pulled a goal back after 70 minutes.
Good work from Matthew Hindmarsh played in Anthony Morgan down the left, and his inch perfect cross found Mike Knight who headed in from close range.
Within 10 minutes Lealholm had pulled a second back when a long ball from Dave Welham was flicked on by Kev Brown and Morgan ran on to score low past the keeper.
With the crowd behind the local side, Phil Brown could have made the score 4-3 but was just out-jumped by the Ryedale keeper Rob Featherstone.
A good match was then marred late in the game, when James Gibson in the Lealholm goal was harshly sent off, after the referee adjudged him to have handled the ball outside of his area.
In the dying seconds, Ryedale capitalised when Adam Hornby beat the offside and scored his second past replacement Lealholm keeper Tim Hodgson.
