SLEIGHTS was the venue for this year's Whitby Gazette cup final and the large crowd that gathered during the evening were treated to an enthralling evening's cricket.
Fryup set about setting a target for Mulgrave to chase and got off to a perfect start with Andy Raw and Dave Bowes in fine form.

They found the gaps in the field and easily negotiated the first 10 overs as the hot and sunny weather looked to be taking its toll on the fielders – made even worse when umpire Alan Knaggs inexplicably refused the normal drinks break half way through the innings.

Raw and Bowes stuck to the task and their stand of 63 was eventually broken when Bowes was out for 27.

Although the bowling was pretty tight, Raw continued to dominate and sent balls crashing all over the pitch before he was out for an impressive 79.

Once he was gone, it was the bowlers who who had the upper hand and they, along with some good backing up in the field, restricted Fryup to 149-5.

The formidable opening partnership of Stu Marsay and Rich Hegarty needed to be on top of their game as the light began to fade and Mulgrave got off to the worst possible start when Hegarty was bowled for a duck by Gavin Lonsdale in the first over.

That brought Andy Thompson to the crease – who had earlier bowled a full 10 overs, taking 4-67 – and the duo started racking up the boundaries and put the run-chasers in sight of the victory target.

But Stu Marsay’s luck ran out when he was caught on 52 off Andy Raw’s bowling so it was left to Thompson to take up the fight.

But wickets kept falling cheaply due to some good work in the field and Mulgrave were running out of overs.

On 119 with only three overs to go, the batsmen were struggling to get Lonsdale and Raw away and the pressure began to tell with a couple of run outs.

Thompson walked on 49 after an edge behind to the keeper and that finished any chance to reaching the target.

Mulgrave finished on 135-7 after their 20 overs to hand Fryup a win and the trophy by 14 runs.
